The Relationship of Self Esteem and Cosmetic Surgery

Published by Author under Self Esteem

Medical breakthroughs have gone beyond repairing broken bones, installing pace makers and organ transplants. In the past, reconstructive surgery served the purpose of obtaining what is lost in the features of a person.

However, the impact of television to the majority of the people has caused the development of cosmetic surgery. Sometimes you may wonder why those actors and actresses you see on television are seemingly perfect physical-wise. You cannot help but envy those perfect teeth, cheekbones, slender bodies and magnificent nose slope.

For others, the envy can branch to insecurities and make them want those features for themselves. Self esteem and cosmetic surgery can be closely related to each other since probably the reason for the existence of cosmetic surgery is to boost an individual’s self esteem.

Others seek the benefits between self esteem and cosmetic surgery to better improve their lifestyle.  People who are looking for ways to beautify themselves and lose those imperfections are resorting to going under the knife.

This can be due to several reasons all resulting in the relationship between self esteem and cosmetic surgery. You may want to be noticed by a man you desire, get rid of that annoying bump on your nose, shed those love handles, or even become an actor; all these are possible reasons as to why self esteem and cosmetic surgery are closely related with each other.

Self Esteem and Cosmetic Surgery: Precautions for the Latter

The preservation of self image has been very important to several people. The ultimate and undying search for perfection has resulted in a number of casualties. If you are thinking of exploring the relationship between self esteem and cosmetic surgery, you must realize that once under the knife, your life will be out of your control.

There have been many cases of death whether during or after operations and most of them have resulted from self esteem and cosmetic surgery. Thus, you must realize that if otherwise you are a candidate for the operation, you must choose other alternatives aside from risking a journey in exploring the connection of self esteem and cosmetic surgery.

Questions are always important before any surgery, especially cosmetic. You must ask yourself if undergoing the operation is really the answer to your problem. If you are one of many who have undergone several operations, not necessarily encompassed by the relationship of self esteem and cosmetic surgery, you must ask yourself if you are addicted. It is important to undergo cosmetic surgery for the right reasons; also be prepared to live with the results.

The low self esteem alcoholic can be anyone within your family or friends or it can be you. Sometimes, the low self esteem alcoholics judge themselves in a negative manner not only for their addiction to the substance but also for other aspects of their personality or behavior.

There are many beliefs that may have caused someone to become a low self esteem alcoholic, such as: “you do not measure up to our expectations”, “you do not deserve love or affection”, “we do not accept you for who you are”, “you are not good enough to deserve that treat”, or “we do not need you here”. These views can be rooted from childhood and can come from friends, parents or siblings.

Still, these things may have not been literally said, but they may be the undertone of other messages being conveyed. These things can be imprinted on an individual’s mind and can seriously affect how someone regards his or herself, thus causing a major self esteem issue. Once a person becomes a low self esteem alcoholic, it may be hard for the healing process to begin and the beliefs to be changed.

A low self esteem alcoholic may have believed some of the statements at some point in their life and those statements made a mark on them. Dealing with those beliefs is hard and a person without proper coping skills can resort to other temporary relief such as alcohol. Eventually, the more he or she becomes affected with such views, the more times he or she will seek alcohol as a temporary cure.

The Low Self Esteem Alcoholic: Prevent Your Child from Becoming One

If you fear the day that your child reaches the certain age when everything would be available for him to use, like alcohol, it is important to educate him about certain adverse effects of the substance and what alcohol dependency can do to his life. It is also vital to educate your child before he reaches adolescence but not as early as preschool.

There are several facts about alcohol that you can relay to your child, such as the disorienting nature of the substance. Additionally, alcohol use can cause distortion in the vision, coordination and hearing of an individual. There are low self esteem alcoholics that have altered emotions and perceptions, impaired judgments, which will eventually lead to accidents and other risky behaviors. The health risks of alcohol should also be conveyed, like liver cirrhosis, memory loss and damage to the heart and central nervous system.

Easy To Do Self Esteem Activities For Children

Published by Author under Self Esteem

Self esteem develops during the early ages of life, thus it is important that parents try to support their children in building confidence as well as self esteem. However, with the limited attention span that children have, you need to have a different approach on how to improve their self esteem. You may use self esteem activities for children. Self esteem activities for children are best to be in the form of entertainment and games to catch the attention of your children.

It is very important that your children develop self esteem. If your children have low self esteem, they may shy away from taking on different challenges in the future or they could have trouble interacting with the people around them. This, if not taken care of properly, can be carried for the rest of your children’s lives and may become detrimental in times of independence. This can be avoided if the parents find and use self esteem activities for children.

Bean Bag Game

The beanbag game is one of the most effective self esteem activities for children. This will help you assess your child’s image of himself or herself and at the same time you can enforce positive opinions to your child. For the beanbag game you will need a poster board, preferably a large one, and draw a 3 x 3 matrix on it. In each square, you write or draw the different aspects of your child’s life on each square of the matrix. For example you can write or draw a school to represent the school life of your child. You can write or draw a representation of parents to signify relationships. Be creative and try to address the more important issues.

Lay your poster board on the floor and give your child a beanbag. Let him or her toss it on the poster board and see where it lands. If it lands in the school box, let him or her to tell you about school – opinions, events, and feelings toward the school. This also applies to the other squares.

After your child finishes his or her discussion, it is your turn to toss the beanbag. If it lands in the school, you tell your child all the things about school that makes you proud of him or her. It could be a quiz that he or she aced, or it could be for always waking up early so as not to be late. Do this cycle again and again until you finish all the squares.

The Various Definitions Of Self Esteem

Published by Author under Self Esteem

Self esteem may be a simple enough word but there are many varying definitions to it. Almost all definitions have something to do with how an individual sees himself. There are many factors that affect one’s self esteem and all these factors are connected to one’s success and failures in life as well as the regard that one has for himself depending on those success and failures. This regard for one’s self can be also be based on emotions and belief and can affect one’s behavior.

There may be two different kinds of needs with regards to self esteem. Both needs have something to do with respect but one is respect from other people and the other need is for self respect. These are said to fuel one’s esteem and affect how an individual sees himself.

Definition Number 1

Self esteem has been defined as a state of an individual’s behavior based on his successes and failures. This definition is somewhat loose because it implies that self esteem is temporary and dependent on the current state of a person. If one is successful, he has self worth but when he fails he does not have it.

Definition Number 2

Another definition of self esteem is self worth that is stable and built through the years. This definition implies that an individual has self esteem basing on the fact that he has the competency to face life’s challenges and difficulties. This shows that self esteem is inherent in one person and can not easily be taken away by mere failures. The person vies himself as someone with worth due to his accumulated success and even by his failures.

Measuring Self Esteem

We have definitive ways of finding out just how much self esteem one has. Two tests are currently being used to see how much self worth or self regard a person has. These tests are written tests, namely Rosenberg and Coopersmith Self Esteem Tests. Both tests have questions that probe one’s self worth but while the Rosenberg tests has just around ten questions, the Coopersmith one has over 50 questions.

People with low self esteem suffer from it as well as those who have high regard or belief for themselves. Having low regard for oneself reeks of low confidence and insecurity while high self esteem may be having too much self confidence. Contrary to popular belief that one can easily change the state of his esteem, this may be difficult especially if the individual is used to it.

Self Esteem Treatment Plan Step By Step

Published by Author under Self Esteem

Having low self esteem is like having a disease that needs to be treated by antibiotics and other medicines. Indeed, a lot of people nowadays are afflicted with the condition called low self esteem and it is becoming endemic – anyone and everyone are susceptible. If you have been affected by low self esteem, it is time for a self esteem treatment plan to improve your confidence and self worth.

Plan Number One

For self esteem treatment plan number one, the focus is mainly on the physical and physiological aspect of the person. If you think that self esteem only pertains to the psyche, then you are wrong. The physical aspect of a person plays a very important role in developing a good level of self esteem that is why it should be included in the self esteem treatment plan.

A very good example of this would be body odor. If you do not take care of yourself and your body and you release smelly scents, then people will definitely avoid you. When this happens, generally you develop low self esteem. From this example, you can easily see how taking care of your body does help in the improvement of one’s self esteem.

Of course, you should also not forget to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle. As much as possible try to avoid unhealthy habits and vices.

Plan Number Two

In the self esteem treatment plan number two the psychological aspect will now be the center of attraction. Since having low self esteem is usually the effect of something negative, all you have to do is to switch it to something positive.

For instance, if you think of yourself as somebody who is worthless, you should think that you are valuable instead. It is true that will be difficult to convince yourself this if other people are saying otherwise. However, if you can’t believe in yourself that you are valuable, how will other people see you? You need to start somewhere and that somewhere is with you. Once you start to learn to value yourself, other people will start valuing you too.

Plan Number Three

Self esteem treatment plan number three is for worst case scenarios. If you or friends and family can’t help you boost your confidence and self esteem, it is now time to ask for the help of a professional. You may go out and seek for the help of a counsellor or somebody who specializes in these matters. It is important however that you are doing this on your own accord and that you really are determined to improve your self esteem.

People With Low Self Esteem

Published by Author under Self Esteem

Having low self esteem is to have a very low opinion of one’s self and one’s capacity in the world. This does not mean however that a person who lacks self esteem may not be successful in life. Some individuals with low self esteem may place well in their work as well as have bouts of high self esteem but the way they see themselves may be always the same. Many people may not even be aware that they lack the right regard for themselves. These individuals may eventually realize what they are missing and do something about it but others may just go on with their lives with low self esteem.

Signs Of Low Self Esteem

Some primary signs of having low self esteem is not being able to look directly into people’s eyes and keeping one’s head down most of the time. Both these signs show that the individual may have some problem connecting with other people or does not want to stand out for fear of being noticed. Some individuals may look into other’s eyes but only for a fleeting moment and then they look away or down. People who suffer from low or a lack of self esteem often do not want to mingle with others or are just satisfied to stay in the background.

Another sign of low self esteem is difficulty in reacting to compliments. People who have little or lack self esteem may get nervous when they are complimented. They usually do not know how to handle compliments and may even sincerely or earnestly deny these. Denying compliments means that they do not believe that they deserve those compliments.

Feeling guilty for everything that happens and believing that bad or unlucky things will and often happen to one’s self are other signs of low self esteem. A person with low self esteem often apologizes for little things even when these are not actually his fault nor was affected by him directly. Those with low self esteem also feel that they deserve the bad or unlucky things that happen to them and often use negative language for themselves.

Other signs of having low self esteem are the inability to be decisive and to take risks. People with low or lack of self esteem have a difficult time deciding because they do not believe that they have the capacity to make a sound decision. They also do not like to take risks because they expect these to fail.

Having low self esteem can affect one’s social standing because people have different reactions to it. One may try to compensate by putting up a false façade of confidence and overcompensate for it.

3 Simple Steps To Increase Self Esteem

Published by Author under Self Esteem

It is inevitable that people experience not-so-good things and will feel bad about themselves from time to time. Some can easily get back up and move on with their lives but there are some who remain scarred from the experience and have already lost their self worth and self esteem.

This should not continue. You have the right to feel good about yourself and you should practice that right. Improve your self esteem by practicing these 5 simple steps to increase self esteem.

Increase Self Esteem Step # 1

Increase self esteem step # 1 is all about assessment. This is the best time to reflect on the past events as well as what is going at present. You need to identify what are those factors that have contributed to you having low self esteem. Remember the events as well as the people who are involved.

Another point of reflection is to know your weaknesses and insecurities. You also need to gauge your perception about yourself and what you think other people think of you. These assessments will be of use as you try to increase self esteem.

Increase Self Esteem Step # 2

In increase self esteem step # 2, the focus is all about instant gratification. Give yourself a break and succumb to the things that you want. Listen to what your mind and body is saying and give them what they are asking for. If your body wants you to go to the gym and workout go out and workout. If your mind is telling you to rest and sleep, then go ahead and rest and sleep.

In step # 2, included here is also having the proper diet and exercise. Contrary to the beliefs of a lot of people, the body and the physical aspects of a man is a big factor in the development of self esteem of a person.

Increase Self Esteem Step # 3

Step # 3 to increase self esteem is focused on transforming negative perceptions about yourself to positive ones. The negative perceptions that you have about yourself may have spawned from people in your past like friends, parents, teachers, neighbours etc. It could even be a formation of your own ideas about yourself based on the norms of society.

Sometimes, when you already have your own perception about yourself, you tend to keep on repeating them to yourself especially the negative ones. For instance if a teacher has told you that you are a worthless piece of trash, this will tend to scar you. You will keep on repeating to yourself “I’m a worthless piece of trash” unconsciously. But you can turn these negative thoughts to something positive. Instead of saying the negative statement you could say, “I’m a valuable person.” This is one way of transforming negative notions to positive ones.

These are just some of the simple steps that you can take to increase self esteem.
