There are few students that are able to make good grades in school without studying.  Good study habits are vital to the success of many students.  Without studying, it is difficult to make good grades on quizzes and exams that are given in class.  Students learn earlier on that having the proper study techniques is vital to making good grades in class.  One of things that students can to do help with their studying is typing their handwritten notes.  There are many benefits for students that type their handwritten notes.

There are many study techniques that people use so that the retention of material is maximized. Typing handwritten notes is one of the ways that students can increase their retention of information that has been given in a class.  By typing hand written notes, it helps put the notes in a format that makes them easier to read and understand.

Some people think believe that their notes are already well-written until it is time for them to study for an exam.  This is when they discover that the notes they took are not as organized as they first though.  Often, when notes are first taken, short cuts are used to keep up with the instructor.  When you are trying to study for an exam, these shorthand-written notes causes you to do more work than you should have to do to study.  Usually you will have to read sentence two or three times to get the full understanding of what you have written.  Tying your notes before you study helps make the studying process much easier.

It is helpful to transfer the notes into a more complete and organized style.  There are two ways that this is beneficial while studying.  The most obvious is that the notes become clear and concise instead of jumbled and unorganized.  It is difficult to study properly if you are not able to understand what you have written down.  You will end up spending more time deciphering your notes and putting them in a logical order than you will spend studying.

Transferring your notes into a more organized style also helps reinforce your learning.  By typing the notes you are better able to absorb the material.  Since typing your notes exposes you to the information an additional time, the information is reinforced in your memory.  The first time you heard the notes, you were most likely trying to take in the information and put it down onto paper in a format that you can remember it.  When you type the information, it serves as a review thereby reinforcing what you heard in the lecture and read on your paper.

Different learning styles have an affect on the ability to study.  There are three basic kinds of learning styles: visual, auditory, and hands-on.  Visual learners learn well by seeing what they are learning.  Auditory learners learn will by hearing.  Finally, hands-on learners learn by doing.  Each of these kinds of learners benefits from typing handwritten notes.

Visual learners can study better by typing their handwritten notes because they can see what they are typing.  The words appearing on the screen reinforces the information for visual learners.  For auditory learners, reading the notes aloud while typing helps will benefit during the study process.  Finally, hands-on learners benefit from the physical act of retyping the notes.

People who type their handwritten notes find that they are more familiar with the information included in the notes once they are ready to study for an exam.  The repetitive nature of typing handwritten notes helps to strengthen your memorization of the material that is included in the notes.  The more you are exposed to the information the better chance you have at retaining it.  Typing the notes that you have handwritten is another repetition in the process of studying the notes.  Without typing your notes, you would have been exposed to the material one less time.

If you can type well, you will find that it does not take a large amount of time to type your handwritten notes.  You can easily enter a few pages of notes into the computer within less than an hour.  Chances are you wouldn’t be able to retain as much information in that amount of time by simply reading the notes, as you will through typing them.
